Curriculum Intent at Barnham Broom

Our Science curriculum at Barnham Broom follows the statutory requirements of The National Curriculum and includes the study of scientific phenomena such as the living world/forces/materials as well as opportunities to develop scientific skills and fieldwork.

We believe science allows children to develop opportunities to ask questions and discover answers about the world around them, learning how to test their hypotheses and explore what their results might mean. This develops a keen sense of problem solving and is an integral part of everyday life and learning in all subjects.

In EYFS there is a focus on enquiry, exploring and questioning, facilitating children’s natural curiosity and providing opportunities for children to learn and discover the world around them taking leads from the children’s interests and questions to develop their learning further.

At Key Stage 1 and 2, science is taught as a discrete subject although we make every effort to link to our theme. There is a balance between subject knowledge being taught and practical, scientific skills. We try to include investigations, experiments, drama, games and any active learning where possible.

Access and Inclusion

At Barnham Broom CofE VA Primary School we recognise the fact that we have pupils of differing ability in all our classes, and so we provide suitable learning opportunities for all pupils by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We achieve this through a range of strategies:

science skills progression

We believe in focusing heavily on developing the scientific skills, needed for accurate scientific discoveries. Above you will find a skills progression map of how children will develop their skills as scientists as they progress through our school.

Science Progression.docx

Here, you will find our Science Progression as well as vocabulary the children will acquire as they move through our school.

We have mixed years in our classes and this changes every year. You will see that many of the themes and their objectives are repeated and taught at differing levels for each class. This ensures that, whatever 'route' children take through our classes, they will have covered all of the key knowledge they need to be ready to study science successfully at secondary school and beyond.
