Infants - YR, Y1 and Y2
The Infants section of our school covers the last year of Early Years (Reception) and the whole of Key Stage One (Year 1 and Year 2). Our Infant year groups are split across two classes:
Apple class has all of the Year R (Reception) children and all of our Year 1 children.
Cherry class has all of our Year 2 children.
As we have three year groups to teach across two classes, a child will spend two years in one or other of the Infant classes (in Apple class or Cherry class).
When children enter the school they begin in Apple class and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. These are our Reception children (Year R). The next academic year, the children all move in to Year 1. In Year 1 the children begin learning from the Key Stage One (KS1) curriculum once they are ready; this is usually during the Autumn term and by the start of the spring term in Year 1.
Apple class
Apple class is taught by Mrs Edmonds (Monday-Wednesday) and Mrs Heritage (Thursday and Friday).
Year R marks the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The EYFS curriculum is covered at Nursery/Pre-Schools and then continued for the Reception year when children first start primary school, before moving onto the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1, in Year 1.
The key approach to learning in the Early Years is through ‘play’. This involves children having the freedom to apply their learned skills through practical, directed and non–directed activities which help to cement their learning. Children are continually immersed into a theme which is based on their interests and help them to develop their knowledge in the seven areas of development:
Communication and Language
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Physical Development
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design
Within the Early Years, learning is facilitated both indoors and outdoors. Learning is supported through directed activities, which take place in both environments. At Barnham Broom Primary School, we believe that a wide range of experiences are vital to developing the learning of the whole child. This is why we do not view the seven areas of development as singular topics, but ones that integrate with each other. This is why we encourage outdoor learning, as it provides many experiences which indoors cannot accommodate, such as bug hunting, seasonal change and large scale construction. We encourage children to be outside in all weathers to ensure they develop a breath of experience and knowledge throughout their time in the Early Years.
Information on the seven areas of learning that make up the Early Learning Goals for Reception children is below.
Key Stage One (KS1)
All Year 1 children are taught in Apple class this year.
Year 1 children in Apple Class
Working alongside the Reception children, the Year 1 children in Apple class access the Year 1 national curriculum. Learning for the year 1’s is broken into multiple smaller focussed sessions. Some of their objectives are completed through weekly challenges after a focused input on that subject area.
Learning across KS1
The National Curriculum for Mathematics, English and Science at KS1 has objectives for each year group. Each child will be taught the objectives relevant to their year group. The other subjects have objectives that cover the whole Key Stage and are not year-group specific.
Throughout the school, the children are treated as individuals and are taught according to their ability; the work in each class is carefully planned and scaffolded to meet the needs of all learners.
Cherry class
Cherry class is taught by Mrs Sivyer (Monday-Wednesday) and Mrs Wakeman (Thursday and Friday).
Year 2 children in Cherry class:
In Year 2 the children continue their learning from the Key Stage One (KS1) curriculum building upon what they have learnt in Year 1. The children will be assessed at the end of Year 2 against the KS1 Curriculum expectations.
The two infant classes work closely together. There is a shared outdoor area between the classes which is used for many different activities (often messy ones!) to develop skills and understanding in English, Maths, Science, Art and DT, Computing, Music, role play, fine and gross motor skills, working together, investigating and experimenting.
A picture of our outdoor area is below - this was taken before the lovely resources and equipment have been arranged for the children to access, this varies from week to week, across the year. We have a mud-kitchen area, wet and dry sand areas. We use water and other mediums outside to help our learning in the seven areas of learning for EYFS and into KS1.
