History
Curriculum Intent
Our vision at Barnham Broom is to enable the children to reach for the stars and let their light shine. We create a learning environment in which children, and adults, are inspired to serve, believe and grow. We believe the study of history inspires children’s curiosity, encourages them to ask critical questions and enables them to have a better understanding of their own local and global community, unlocking the potential of every child.
During their time at Barnham Broom, children will access the history curriculum through various themes. Through these, they will develop their understanding of history and how to work as a historian through different lenses, including chronological understanding, interpretations, changes over time, and others. As they progress through the school from EYFS to KS2, they will strengthen prior learning by making links and deepening skills; considering what they have learnt before and what they will learn in the future.
When children leave Barnham Broom, they will have developed an awareness of the past and be confident historians. They will have developed an understanding of significant events and figures that have played key roles in global, national and local development.
“The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.”
Roosevelt.
Access and Inclusion
At Barnham Broom CofE VA Primary School we recognise the fact that we have pupils of differing ability in all our classes, and so we provide suitable learning opportunities for all pupils by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We achieve this through a range of strategies:
Setting common tasks which are opened ended allowing for a variety of responses
Providing a range of challenges and a variety of resources
Using additional adults to support the work of individual pupils or small groups
