Geography
Curriculum Intent
Our vision at Barnham Broom is to enable the children to reach for the stars and let their light shine. We create a learning environment in which children, and adults, are inspired to serve, believe and grow. We believe the study of geography inspires children’s curiosity, encourages them to ask critical questions and enables them to have a better understanding of their own local and global community, unlocking the potential of every child.
During their time at Barnham Broom, children will access the geography curriculum through various themes. Through these, they will develop their understanding of geography and the wider world through different lenses, including place knowledge, human geography, physical geography, fieldwork, and others. As they progress through the school from EYFS to KS2, they will strengthen prior learning by making links and deepening skills; considering what they have learnt before and what they will learn in the future.
When children leave Barnham Broom, they will have developed an awareness of the world around them and be confident geographers. They will have developed an understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments; together with an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
“Geography is about more than places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exist across continents. In the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.”
Barack Obama
“Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future.”
Michael Palin
Access and Inclusion
At Barnham Broom CofE VA Primary School we recognise the fact that we have pupils of differing ability in all our classes, and so we provide suitable learning opportunities for all pupils by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We achieve this through a range of strategies:
Setting common tasks which are opened ended allowing for a variety of responses
Providing a range of challenges and a variety of resources
Using additional adults to support the work of individual pupils or small groups
