Maths

We love maths at Barnham Broom Primary School!

At BBPS we have adopted a mastery approach to teaching maths in order to give the children the best all-round understanding of mathematics. We base our teaching around the White Rose Maths resources and planning which we adapt to suit the children we teach. We use MyMaths and TTRockstars to further fluency of number and to support children's learning.

The mastery approach to learning breaks each area of maths down into small, achievable steps, which are then gradually built upon in order to achieve a mastery understanding of the specific area taught. It is important at BBPS that all children have equal opportunity, and the mastery approach reflects this attitude in that all children will receive the same teaching, it is then how the tasks are presented that allows for varying depth for those with greater understanding. With this approach to our maths, we feel that our children are able to communicate their reasoning and explanation of how they are going to approach problems and reach their answers, we feel this deepens their understanding, curiosity and enjoyment of mathematics.

INTENT:

At BBPS, our aim is that children enjoy mathematics and become independent, resourceful mathematicians with high levels of self-confidence and thus are able to progress and reach their full potential through their learning journey from EYFS to the end of KS2.

As part of our curriculum, we provide regular problem-solving challenges and investigations in maths and encourage learning by celebrating mistakes as part of our journey. We aim to instil a positive ‘can-do’ attitude to all learning for our of our pupils.

Support for SEN/disadvantaged children:

·      Teacher and TA individual support in class

·      Teacher and TA small group work in class

·      Catch up / revisit time with TA / teacher

·      The use of concrete resources and manipulative in class

·      Interventions with TA with extra resources

           ·     Differentiation of tasks

Additional opportunities for more able children:

·      Teacher and TA individual support in class

·      Teacher and TA small group work in class

·      Small group interventions boosters with HT / TA / teacher

·      Three star challenges and further extensions and reasoning

Attached at the bottom of the page you can find download links to the National Curriculum for maths, as well as our school calculation policy which outlines the methods used in school. Finally, you can also find long-term plans used by each class in-line with White Rose Maths detailing what aspect of mathematics your child will be learning and when.

N.B. Although each class follows the White Rose outlines, the class teacher / teachers may adapt the schedule to better suit the cohorts needs. For example, if the teacher feels extra-time is needed with a certain aspect of mathematics then the teacher will adjust the plans to suit the children in that class.

N.B.B. In Class 1, the YR units are followed as extra activities and starting activities alongside the Y1 curriculum for mathematics.

We are delighted to say that at Barnham Broom Primary School each pupil in KS2 has access to TTRockstars.

Times tables are a hugely important aspect of mathematical fluency. No matter what area of maths you are studying whether multiplication, geometry, fractions or even long division, knowledge of times tables is always needed.

Therefore, we encourage the practise of learning times tables both in school and at home and this is a brilliant and fun way to do so.

Attached at the bottom of the page is further guidance for parents on how to support your child at home. Essentially, TTRockstars is a fantastic resource used to improve children's times-tables knowledge and their recall speed.

Choose your rock name, create an avatar, then proceed to 'rock on' with your times tables to earn coins that you can then spend in the virtual shop!  Feeling confident? Why not challenge your friends to a battle? Or even your teachers?

Good luck!
